Wulff upgraded 3 travellers in 2007 during a holiday trip to the US from economy to business. Lufthansa said you need 210000 bonus miles to upgrade 3 travellers to business. These bonus miles could be amassed during 420 flights from Hanover to Munich.

The lawyer of Wulff announced in the aftermath that the mileage account exists since the end of the 80s. "Mr. Wulff exclusively pays with his Lufthansa credit card."
THe problem? Miles & more exists only since 1993. The corresponding credit card exists only since 1999. Wulff had to pay 210000 € by credit card, again since 1999.

The original announcement was that Wulff booked business class from the start. The lawyer stated in the aftermath that the upgrade was done by privately collected bonus miles.
According to Lufthansa, an inflight upgrade is not possible.
