Bombshell Over Trump Military Service
New claim that just isn't the case
Earlier this week, Donald Trump said during an interview that he avoided being called to serve in the Vietnam War because he "got lucky" and "had a very high draft number." The Smoking Gun reports, however, that appears not to have been the case.
According to the website, Selective Service records tell a different story:
By the time his number (356) was drawn during the December 1, 1969 draft lottery, Trump had already received four student deferments and a medical deferment, according to military records on file with the National Archives and Records Administration. An extract of Trump’s Selective Classification record, seen here, was provided in response to a TSG records request.
(Click here to view the records obtained by The Smoking Gun.)
National Review Online relays what Trump initially told New York-based station WNYW about the matter earlier this week. “I was sitting at college, watching," he said to the local outlet, "I was going to the Wharton School of Finance. And I was watching as they did the draft numbers and I got a very, very high number and those numbers [they] never got up to.”
The Smoking Gun reports, however, that the draft lottery that took place in December of 1969 came eighteen months after Trump graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Canada vote dominated by left-leaning third-party surge A third-party surge has unsettled the status quo as Canada prepares to go to the polls on Monday.
OTTAWA — A third-party surge has unsettled the status quo as Canada prepares to go to the polls on Monday, with Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper seeking an ever-elusive majority government.
The run-up to Canada's fourth election in seven years has been dominated by speculation over how the surging support in opinion polls for the left-leaning New Democratic Party (NDP) will play out.
Harper and the Tories failed to earn an overall majority in both the 2006 and 2008 elections, leaving themselves prey to opposition parties bringing the government down, as on this occasion, with a vote of no confidence.
The Conservatives lead all three main opposition parties in pre-election surveys but remain shy of the support needed to win a majority of seats in parliament.

Exxon Earns Whopping $11 Billion in First Quarter
Exxon (XOM) earned nearly $11 billion in the first quarter, a performance that will likely land it in the center of the national debate over high gasoline prices.
The world's largest publicly traded company on Thursday reported net income of $10.65 billion, or $2.14 per share, in the first three months of the year. That compares with $6.3 billion, or 1.33 per share. Revenue increased 26 percent to $114 billion.
The results surpassed Wall Street estimates of $2.04 per share on sales of $112.6 billion, according to FactSet.
The quarter was Exxon's best since earning a record-setting $14.83 billion in 2008's third quarter. It comes at a time when some drivers are paying $4 or more for gas and President Obama is threatening the oil industry's multibillion-dollar tax subsidies.

Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe has urged an end to the "shocking" arrest of dozens of mainly Tunisian migrants in France as detentions continue.
Sixty suspected illegal migrants were rounded up in the French capital on Wednesday and 15 have been detained in the southern city of Marseille.
Hundreds of young Tunisian men are sleeping rough in parks around Paris.
Most reached France via Italy, where thousands have arrived by boat this year amid unrest in the Arab world.

A NATO airstrike has accidentally killed up to 12 Libyan rebels in an apparent case of mistaken friendly fire that rebel commanders say could have been avoided.
At first, Libyan rebels who've been pleading for more help from NATO in battling Moammar Gadhafi's forces were hesitant to even admit the deaths from Wednesday's NATO airstrike in Misrata. But as the bodies piled up, rebel commanders acknowledged that they believe NATO mistakenly fired on their men. NATO said it was looking into the claim.
Journalist Marie Colvin, of London's Sunday Times newspaper, counted 11 bodies herself, CNN reported. She was in downtown Misrata and received reports from rebel commanders about the attack, which took place on the Mediterranean coast just east of a large steel plant in Misrata. The strike was by a single NATO warplane, and there were no other aircraft in the sky at the time, survivors said.
A grieving rebel commander, Abdullah Mohammed, gave The New York Times a slightly different location for the NATO airstrike, saying it targeted a salt factory where rebels had taken refuge from attacks by pro-Gadhafi forces. Mohammed said the rebels moved into the salt factory on Tuesday and informed NATO of their location. They were still inside when a NATO warplane attacked the following day.
"We stayed in exactly the same place," Mohammed said. "And they hit it."
He put the death toll at 12, with five others wounded.
Mohammed and other survivors were initially afraid to discuss what happened with Wednesday's NATO airstrike, for fear that allied forces might pull back from Misrata. Libyan rebels have long complained of a lack of support from NATO forces, which have been careful not to use too much firepower in areas where civilians live. But NATO airstrikes have picked up in recent days.

House GOP leader backs away from Ryan budget
In the face of strong public opposition, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) backed away slightly from the House-approved budget proposal drafted by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) that would turn Medicare into a voucher program over ten years.
“I’m for it,” Boehner told ABC’s Topline. “It’s our idea. Right? It’s Paul’s idea. Other people have other ideas. I’m not wedded to one single idea, but I think it’s — we have a plan.”
That’s a remarkably noncommittal attitude from the Speaker whose party took a risky vote two Fridays ago to pass the controversial measure through the House, which also slashes taxes on the wealthy while cutting trillions of dollars in government spending.

German Social Dems made a deceissive failure by not excluding Sarazzin
Whether you like Sarazzin or not is not the point anymore. Well I don't like him anyway, because he palavered about the unnecessary use of radiators or something, but that is a while ago. The point is with which shocking directness the social dems put an end to the exclusion trial about Sarazzin. They didn't even try to paint this trial as anything anymore somebody cares about. So the span widened in which you can have a position within the social dems and this is a clear minus for the programmatic character of a party. It's a puddle. Uncarbonated water. Pixx. The social dems obviously trust in Sarazzin to get some spirit into their loosers' nest. Trust some demagogue instead of having a program. I'd call this politly idleness. Well, the head of the Jewish symposium inside the social dems,Sergey Lagodinsky, quitted and some Turkish integration guy from Giessen, Tanriverdi , (of BAGIV) quitted as well, Kolat is totally nerved, mass exodus of members has started and some state organizations of the social dems declared their shock as well.
And Nahles' talk she didnt make a deal with Sarazzin is nonsense. He said he'll drop a line in the coming months or so. That's all. And Nahles knows she made a mistake because she has no guarantee Sarazzin will only move a finger. Therefore this hollow pointless 'no there isnt a deal.' So why is he still there? If you dont need him, you can fire him. Period. So the demagogue thing from above is exactly true.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Monday that he doesn't think it would be appropriate for the U.S. or NATO to intervene militarily in Syria the way they had in Libya.
"I don't see a scenario right now or anytime in the near future where the injection of U.S. or NATO military action would in any way beneficially help the situation, I'm sorry to say," McCain said on NBC's "Today" show.

Lindsay Lohan out of jail on $75,000 bond
Los Angeles (CNN) -- Lindsay Lohan, accused of stealing a necklace, spent five hours in custody before posting a $75,000 bond Friday evening after a judge sentenced her to 120 days in jail for violating her drunk driving probation.
Her release from Los Angeles County's Lynwood Correctional Facility capped a long day that included a victory for the actress when a judge reduced the felony grand theft charge to a misdemeanor.
Lohan will remain free on bond while her lawyer appeals the jail sentence for the probation violation, but she must immediately start serving 480 hours of community service, Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner said.

Trump to McCain: 'You're Hired!'
As Donald Trump flirts with a presidential run, he talks to Meghan McCain about his campaign strategy, his nights at the Holiday Inn, and why Romney won’t be the Republican nominee.
Is The Donald serious? As his poll numbers continue to soar, it’s starting to look that way. On TV, Trump headlines The Apprentice, but on the telephone with me he sounded like he was considering a presidential run. He even invited me to his press conference later this spring, where he could announce his decision. One of the biggest obstacles for the Republican Party is they’ve yet to find a candidate with the same mass appeal and charisma as Barack Obama. If Trump runs, he’ll dominate the airwaves. He could actually pull it off in the same way Arnold Schwarzenegger surprised the pundits and became the governor of California. I talked to Trump about his chances.

Las Vegas elections
After some laughter, the deck was shuffled and cut. The first woman drew a five of diamonds, the second a king of diamonds. The outcome was clear.
A Vegas moment? Sure, except this evening's card game didn't take place in a casino and no money rode on the outcome.
This, as it happens, is how Nevadans settle elections when there's a tie. State law since 1965 has dictated that the winner be determined by "drawing lots," and in most cases that has meant relying on a card draw.
Tanya Flanagan and Linda Meisenheimer both garnered 328 votes in the April 5 primary for a City Council seat in the Vegas suburb of North Las Vegas. That was good 20.71 percent of the vote and left them in a tie for second place behind the top vote-getter, Pamela Goynes-Brown.
Flanagan drew first because her name was first alphabetically, and she knew she was in trouble when that five came up. In the end, it wasn't close: Meisenheimer will face Goynes-Brown in the June 7 general election.

A jury on Tuesday convicted the majority owner of what had been one of the nation's largest mortgage companies on all 14 counts in a $2.9billion fraud
ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A jury on Tuesday convicted the majority owner of what had been one of the nation's largest mortgage companies on all 14 counts in a $2.9 billion fraud trial that officials have said is one of the most significant prosecutions to arise from the nation's financial crisis.
Prosecutors said Lee Farkas led a fraud scheme of staggering proportions for roughly eight years as chairman of Florida-based Taylor Bean & Whitaker. The fraud not only caused the company's 2009 collapse and put its 2,000 employees out of work, but also contributed to the collapse of Alabama-based Colonial Bank, the sixth-largest bank failure in U.S. history.
The jury returned its verdict late Tuesday after more than a full day of deliberations.
Colonial and two other major banks — Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas — were collectively cheated out of nearly $3 billion, prosecutors estimated. Farkas and his cohorts — six of whom entered guilty pleas to related charges and testified against him at the two-week trial in U.S. District Court — also tried to fraudulently obtain more than $500 million in taxpayer-funded relief from the government's bank bailout program, the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP).

Rove nopes Trump FOR BIRTHER ISSUE
Bush Adviser Karl Rove Lashes Out At Trump: He’s ‘A Joke Candidate’
By firmly planting his flag on the right-wing birther conspiracy, real estate mogul Donald Trump is single-handedly driving a deep wedge into the Republican party. His improbable popularity in the polls has motivated some high-profile Republicans to jump on the birther bandwagon while leaving others fighting to deny him any future relevance. President Bush’s former adviser Karl Rove let Fox News On The Record host Greta Van Susteren know last Friday that he falls squarely into the second camp. Utterly aghast at his full-time peddling of the birther conspiracy, Rove labeled him the “joke candidate” of “the nutty right” who will never be elected by Republicans or the American people:
VAN SUSTEREN: I don’t agree with Donald Trump on this. I’ll say it right from the get-go. But does this hurt the Republican Party?
ROVE: Well, it hurts Donald Trump and it removes — he was an interesting candidate who had a business background and could have contributed to the dialogue. But his full embrace of the birther issue means that he’s off there in the nutty right and is now an inconsequential candidate. I’m shocked. The guy’s smarter than this. And you know, the idea that President Obama was not born in Hawaii, being — you know, making that the centerpiece of his campaign, means that he’s just a joke candidate.France refused entry to a train carrying North African migrants from Italy

Quantum Leap: Bits of Light Teleported to Another Place
Our world is getting closer to "Star Trek" every day, it seems. Scientists announced today (April 14) they've been able to teleport special bits of light from one place to another, a la "Beam me up, Scotty."
While the advance doesn't necessarily mean we'll ever be able to teleport people, it does represent some pretty nifty, mind-bending physics.
Teleportation requires taking advantage of a quirk of quantum physics called entanglement. Two particles can be bonded so that even when separated by large distances, they communicate instantly, and what happens to one affects the other. (It's a situation so bizarre Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance.")
...
Schrödinger's cat
This actually isn’t the first time physicists have teleported particles or light in this way. What differentiates the new research is that this time they teleported something much more complicated. This teleported light wasn't just any light — it was in a special quantum state called a Schrödinger's-cat state.

Punk'd: Dems force GOP to vote down own budget
WASHINGTON – House Republicans scrambled Friday to vote down their own extremely conservative budget after Democrats called their bluff and withheld opposition, forcing GOP lawmakers to defeat the bill themselves.
The proposal, put forth by the Republican Study Committee, was a more extreme alternative to the plan offered by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-WI). It sought to make massive cuts to Social Security and Medicare while providing even larger tax breaks for high income earners.

Democrats nearly pulled off a budgetary coup on the House floor today, employing a parliamentary maneuver in an effort to make Republicans own the extreme budget proposals they’ve offered.daily kos
At one point during the vote, a majority of Republicans were on record in favor of the RSC budget. Democrats then began casting votes as “present,” rather than “no,” as they would be expected to do. Without the Democratic "no" votes, the amendment would be adopted and would supersede Budget ranking member Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) ballyhooed budget.
After time for the vote expired, Republicans held it open so that enough of them could switch their votes to prevent the RSC budget from passing.
In the end, only 119 of the 176 RSC Members voted for their own budget proposal, authored by Rep. Scott Garrett (R-N.J.). Because so many Democrats voted "present," meanwhile, the final tally was 136-119 against – a bizarre total in a chamber with 435 members.
Nicolas Cage Arrested on Domestic Violence Charge
Nicolas Cage was arrested in Louisiana early Saturday morning, following an altercation with his wife of six years, Alice.
The incident that led to the arrest was a rather public one: According to TMZ sources, the Oscar winner was "very drunk" on a New Orleans street when a taxi driver allegedly witnessed the couple quarreling loudly. The cabbie reportedly called the police when Cage pushed his wife.
Cage is said to have taunted cops into taking him into custody, repeatedly refusing their request to quietly go home and asking, "Why don't you just arrest me?" The officers ultimately obliged, charging Cage with disturbing the peace and domestic violence.
He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing; his wife is reportedly denying any physical violence occurred, and expressing no wish to press charges.
With Alice, the actor is raising a son named Kal-El, born in 2005. Cage, who lost his father in 2009, was previously married to Patricia Arquette and Lisa Marie Presley.

German executive sentenced in death of Italian workers Director-general of German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp sentenced to 16.5 years in the death of 7 Italian workers.
ROME — An Italian court on Friday sentenced German steelmaker ThyssenKrupp's director-general in Italy to 16.5 years in jail for the deaths of seven workers after a fire at its Turin plant in December 2007.
Harald Espenhahn was convicted by a court in Turin in the north of the country of "voluntary homicide", a first in Italy for a workplace accident.
Seven workers died days and weeks after suffering severe burns when a fire broke out at the steel plant's thermal treatment department.
The fire was one of the worst in Italy and sparked a public debate over health and safety regulations.
Four other executives were convicted of complicity by carelessness and sentenced to 13.5 years in prison, and a fifth received a 10-year jail term.
ThyssenKrupp was also fined one million euros.

The center party of Kiviniemi (42), the conservatives led by Minister of Finance Jyrki Katainen (39) and the oppositional Social Democrats with their leading candidate Jutta Urpilainen (35) fight traditionally for the first place in popularity with the voters. That's the requirement for the top position in a broad coalition .
Katainen and Urpilainen announced their willingness to form a coalition with Soini as well. "Us in Finland, we are always willing to cooperate" the leading candidates of the center say as out of one mouth. Only the Greens - so far with the center party, conservatives and the liberal SVP (a party of the Swedish minority in Finland) in government - exclude co-operation with the "True Finns."

GET OFF YOUR BALLS!
Umberto Bossi is reknown for his drastic language. Now he explains the solution of the Italian refugee problem in his own way. If the weather turned against Italy, the refugees should move through - to northern Europe. However, they do not like the idea.
Umberto Bossi made the point: "Get off your Balls," this is what the refugees from North Africa would have to do. The accurate words of the " Minister for State reform," they have become a catchphrase. Bossis brilliant idea: 'Don't link too much to Italy if you are from northern Africa, link to the rest of Europe.'
Bossi, leader of the league north, was always reknown for his dripping vulgar language. He said for example: "Us Leghisti, we always got a stiff one." He found a solution for the Tunesians as well: "The Tunisians don't want to remain in Italy anyway," he brooded, therefore we give a Europe-wide valid permit to stay to those , so we get rid of them quickly. They will want to leave for France and Germany they want to leave and we let them … "and as of such - they got off their balls. "

Kills and injuries for explosion in Minsk
The impact of the explosion ripped of the legs of one person. That means that the local impact was very high and thus it should be a professional bomb.
KGB units, fire workers and policemen rushed to the scene. The secret service is still called KGB in Belarus.

MINSK, Belarus — An explosion tore through a key subway station in the Belarusian capital of Minsk during evening rush hour Monday. President Alexander Lukashenko said 11 people were killed and about 100 injured.
There was no immediate determination of what caused the explosion, but the RIA Novosti news agency cited Lukashenko as saying he did not discount the possibility that it was organized "from outside." The authoritarian leader, under strong pressure from the West over his suppression of the opposition, has frequently alleged outside forces seek to destabilize his regime.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene saw heavily wounded people being carried out of the Oktyabrskaya subway station, including one person with missing legs.

Berlusconi in court on corruption charge
Milan, Italy (CNN) -- Italy's Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi arrived in court in Milan, Italy, on Monday, to face financial corruption charges related to his media empire.
The case is not related to the headline-grabbing allegations that he paid for sex repeatedly with an underage prostitute and later tried to pull strings to get her out of jail when she was arrested for theft.
Monday's trial is related to alleged fraud in the sale of movie and television rights by Mediaset, Berlusconi's broadcasting company.
Berlusconi appeared confident as he appeared in court Monday, denying the charges.
The case has been in and out of court for years, with Judge Fabio Paparella ordering Berlusconi in 2006 to stand trial on charges of false accounting, embezzlement, and tax fraud.
Berlusconi later passed a law shielding top government officials from prosecution while they're in office, then saw it struck down by judges.
