The former federal minister of defense Hans Apel (SPD) is dead. This was communicated by secretary of defense Thomas de Maizière in parliament. Apel died at the age of 79 years in Hamburg. He was from 1978 to 1982 Secretary of Defense among chancellor Helmut Schmidt, he officiated as minister of finance from 1974 to 1978. 1990 he left parliament after 25 years.
NATO double track decision
Hans Apel was one of the defenders of the Nato double track decision among the German social dems. Schmidt and him mainly contributed to its defense, Willy Brandt and Wehner mainly opposed it.
The double track decision led to the foundation of the German Greens, for example Jutta Dithfurth, but Trittin and Krretschmann were also among them
