and we got an even better perspective on what Bush did in Iraq.He certainly has all the diplomatic problems one could expect for the lousy UN start out of the Iraq war. When Powell waffled something about Bio-labs. Iraq said clearly (yesterday): US out by 2011. And? Where's the outcry? Where's Dunno Rumsfeld right now? Right, the enemy is north, east, south and west of Baghdad. But definetely not in Baghdad! French, German, English complaining about Iraqi demand? No. What stood in the thread text is exactly correct: Iran is the biggest problem for US hegemony. That was clear since 911 and even before. It causes power stasis in the region. But didnt like to break it up because he said it might be 2 risky. Bush was only greedy for oil, despite he was a coward. The balance of power in the region has shifted towards worse. When invading Kuwait, Iraq had at least half a million men under arms. I guess now there will be surely some guys with strong water cannons to fight insurgents. Bush made Iran the rising force and Iraq the source for his oil monopoly, what has shot the oil price to 90$.

MSNBC host: Why isn’t Carlson calling for Palin’s execution?
rawstory
MSNBC's Cenk Uygur wondered Wednesday why Fox News' Tucker Carlson didn't call for Sarah Palin to be executed after she killed a defenseless caribou.
After all, Carlson had proclaimed Tuesday that NFL quarterback Michael Vick should have been given the death penalty for killing dogs.
"Now, I'm a Christian," Carlson announced, while filling in for Fox News' Republican commentator Sean Hannity. "I've made mistakes myself. I believe fervently in second chances but Michael Vick killed dogs and he did it in a heartless and cruel way and I think, personally, he should have been executed for that."
Carlson had become outraged because President Barack Obama praised Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie for giving Vick a second chance.

Obama announces 6 recess appointments
By Michael A. Memoli and Peter Nicholas, Washington BureauPresident Obama used his executive power Wednesday to overcome what the White House called obstruction by Senate Republicans
The appointments came amid deep White House frustration over the slow pace of Senate confirmations. A memo issued by the White House on Wednesday said that 79 of Obama's nominations were pending in the Senate when the lame-duck session ended.
The six nominees appointed have been waiting a total of 888 days to start their respective jobs, the White House said.
"All administrations face delays in getting some of their nominees confirmed, but the extent of Republican obstruction of Obama nominees is unprecedented," a White House official said in a statement.
The appointments fill a total of four ambassadorships, including Robert Stephen Ford as the envoy to Syria. Obama also appointed James Cole as deputy attorney general and William J. Boarman to the more obscure post of public printer of the United States, who heads the Government Printing Office.

The election phase for 2012 starts out next year in France. Sarkozy hopes for a year without scandals and a weak enemy. If it should be DSK though -how the IMF head is called in his home country - it will be difficult.
It's clear of what Sarkozy will think during shaving in the upcoming weeks: of 2012. Then tere will be elections in France. There is no doubt that Sarkozy thrives for a second term. He did not declare it though. Even wife Carla Bruni seems to be supportive of it. She's busy recording her next record.

Oldest human remains found
JERUSALEM — Israeli archaeologists say they may have found the earliest evidence yet for the existence of modern humans.
A Tel Aviv University team excavating a cave in central Israel said Monday they found teeth that were about 400,000 years old. The earliest Homo sapiens remains found until now are half that old, and were discovered in Ethiopia.
Archaeologist Avi Gopher said on Monday that further research is needed to solidify the claim, which is detailed in the December edition of the American Journal of Physical Anthropology. If the claim is borne out, the discovery would change "the whole picture of evolution," he said.

Hungarian Fidescz couples EU presidency and surpression of freedom of speech
Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban, poised to take over presidency of the European Union, is fighting back against criticism from Germany and other countries over a new Hungarian law that some fear could be used to curb press freedom.
The law, which was passed last week by the Parliament in Budapest and comes into force on Jan. 1, empowers the newly created National Media and Communications Authority to impose heavy fines for coverage that it considers unbalanced or offensive to human dignity or common morals.
Dunja Mijatovic of the Organization of Security and Cooperation in Europe, which monitors press and human rights freedoms throughout the region, said he was concerned that the legislation, “if misused, can silence critical media and public debate in the country.”
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel spoke out strongly against the new law.
“As a country that is about to take over the president of the E.U., Hungary will have a particular responsibility for the image of the whole union in the world,” said a spokesman for Mrs. Merkel.

(CNN) -- Dutch authorities have arrested 12 men of Somali origin they believe were about to carry out a terrorist attack, authorities said Saturday.
The country's intelligence service provided information that led to the arrests in Rotterdam, Public Prosecution Service spokesman Wim de Bruin told CNN.
No weapons or explosives were found, he said. The suspects are in police custody.
"The attack was said to be imminent so the national police started an investigation which led to the arrest of 12 Somalis later on Friday in Rotterdam," de Bruin said. "We are not sure about what the target was, how they were going to carry out the attack or when."
A Dutch counterterrorism office spokeswoman said the immediate threat to the country has been removed and the terror alert level will remain "limited," or relatively low.
"We are now following the information that comes out of the interrogations with these 12 individuals to see if there still remains a threat from this plot," said Judith Sluiter of the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism.
The men, between ages 19 and 48, were arrested in various locations. Police have searched a pawn shop, four homes and two hotel rooms, de Bruin said.
Six of the suspects live in Rotterdam and one is from Denmark. Some are Dutch citizens. They all are of Somali origin, de Bruin said.

Tunisia
TUNIS — A Tunisian teenager died on Friday and ten others were injured when protestors attacked a national guard post in a region gripped by tensions over youth joblessness, students and the government said.
Mohamed Ammari, who was 18, died when he was shot in the chest during a confrontation with security forces in the town of Menzel Bouzaiene, in the central Sidi Bouzid region, said student representative Mohamed Fadhel.
Several thousand people took part in the protest, which quickly turned violent, said Fadhel.
Protesters set fire to three police cars, a train locomotive, the local headquarters of the ruling Constitutional Democratic Rally party and a national guard post, whose guards had to seek shelter in a mosque, Fadhel said.
Police had surrounded the town and were not letting people travel in or out, and many arrests had been made, he said.
The government confirmed the incident, and said two members of the national guard were in a serious condition with burns.
"The groups involved in these acts of violence and trouble encircled and attacked a national guard post by throwing fire bombs and stones," a source at the interior ministry told AFP.
After attempting to disperse the crowd by firing warning shots, security forces opened fire in self defence, said the official.
"This incident led to one death and two injured among the attackers. Several national guard agents suffered burns, including two who are in a coma," said a government statement published by its information service.
Tensions have been simmering in the region since the attempted suicide on December 17 of 26-year-old university graduate Mohammed Bouazizi, who was forced to scratch out a living peddling fruit and vegetables because he could not find a job.
When police confiscated his produce because he did not have the necessary permit, he doused himself in petrol and set himself alight, said the Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights.
Bouazizi was transferred to a hospital in capital Tunis with severe burns.
The incident prompted violent demonstrations in which protestors burned tyres and chanted slogans demanding jobs.
The government said the violence was isolated and had been exploited by the opposition.
Tensions heightened on December 22 when another young man, Sidi Bouzid, climbed up an electricity pylon and electrocuted himself on the cables, saying he was fed up with being unemployed.
The government would not confirm the suicide, but ordered a judicial investigation into the circumstances of his death.
Development Minister Mohamed Nouri Jouini travelled to Sidi Bouzid on Thursday and announced a new 15-million-dinar (7.5 million euros/10 million dollars) employment programme.
The opposition Democratic Progressive Party, which does not have a seat in parliament, called on the government to stop arresting young people and instead focus on dialogue and job creation.
Protests are rare in Tunisia, where the government generally tolerates little in the way of dissent.

Italian Students Protest University Reforms
ROME — Tens of thousands of students took to the streets on Wednesday to protest planned changes in the university system but stayed away from the historic center here, much of which had been cordoned off by the police to avoid a repeat of last week’s violent demonstrations.
The protest turned out to be peaceful, allaying widespread fears, as thousands marched from the city’s main university, La Sapienza, steering clear of the historic center but blocking traffic on a main highway.
Other protests in Palermo and Milan turned violent, with skirmishes between demonstrators and the police. In Turin, students occupied a landmark building.
In Rome, some protesters carried fake presents labeled with politically minded holiday wishes — “Social welfare for students and temporary workers,” one read — to oppose what they said were cuts to Italy’s famously dysfunctional universities.

Gareth Williams also had £15K collection of women's clothing.
Officers investigating the death of Gareth Williams, a GCHQ code breaker who was on secondment to MI6, have released details of his unusual private life and explained the extraordinary riddle that surrounds his death.
While the death is officially described as “suspicious” rather than murder, officers also released e-fits of a Mediterranean couple that visited the flat a few weeks later and let themselves in with a key.
Det Chief Supt Hamish Campbell, the head of Scotland Yard’s murder squad, said he was aware that the details would be “embarrassing, hurtful and distressing” for Mr Williams’s family but said they supported the appeal for anyone that had encountered him in the nightclubs, online or at women’s clothing shops to come forward.
“We are very sure that someone else was in that flat. We want to know the circumstances when you would leave somebody in that position, by accident or design,” he added.
Det Chief Insp Jacqueline Sebire, who is leading the inquiry, described Mr Williams, 31, from Anglesey in North Wales, as an “intensely private person” who had kept his lifestyle hidden from friends and family.

Britain, Russia expel envoys in spat
Britain expelled a Russian diplomat suspected of spying Tuesday, and Russia responded by expelling a diplomat from the British Embassy in Moscow.
LONDON - Britain expelled a Russian diplomat suspected of spying Tuesday, and Russia responded by expelling a Briton in the latest skirmish in a long-running spat over espionage.
Foreign Secretary William Hague said Britain had asked the Russian Embassy in London to withdraw a staff member on Dec 10 "in response to clear evidence of activities by the Russian intelligence services against UK interests."
Russia, in return, expelled a diplomat from the British Embassy in Moscow.
"We reject any basis for this action," Hague said in a statement. The two staff left their posts in London and Moscow on Monday night, his office said.
A British government official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Russian officers had "crossed the line" of what was deemed acceptable. The official declined to expand, but insisted that the British diplomat had no ties to Britain's intelligence community.
The Russian Foreign Ministry and the Kremlin refused to comment when contacted by the Associated Press.
UK-Russia relations soured after the 2006 poisoning death in London of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko. Russia has refused to extradite Britain's main suspect in the case, former KGB officer Andrei Lugovoi.
Senate passes key hurdle in arms treaty with Russia
The strategic nuclear arms treaty passed a key procedural hurdle on Tuesday when the Senate voted to bring the weapons pact between the United States and Russia to the floor of the Senate for a final vote.
The Senate voted 67-28 to pass a cloture motion, seemingly enough to assure final ratification. Eleven Republicans joined with 56 Democrats to pass the cloture motion.
It will take 67 votes to ratify the New Start pact, which would give the Obama administration its top foreign policy goal in the lame-duck session.
Throughout the day, GOP senators lined up to explain why they ready to vote for the treaty, which had been opposed by some top Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Jon Kyl of Arizona.
Among Republicans announcing their support were Richard G. Lugar of Indiana, George V. Voinovich of Ohio, Scott Brown of Massachusetts, Olympia J. Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine, Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker of Tennessee, Johnny Isakson of Georgia, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Thad Cochran of Mississippi, and Bob Bennett of Utah. All voted for cloture.

Britain's business minister 'declares war' on News Corporation chief.
Britain's business minister said he had "declared war" on Rupert Murdoch and planned to block the media mogul's efforts to take control of pay TV giant BSkyB, in remarks published Tuesday.
Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat business secretary in Britain's coalition government, made the comments to undercover reporters from The Daily Telegraph newspaper who were posing as constituents.
"You may wonder what is happening with the Murdoch press," it quoted Cable as saying. "I have declared war on Mr Murdoch and I think we're going to win."
Discussing the 12.0-billion-dollar (9.1-billion-euro) takeover bid by Murdoch's News Corporation for BSkyB -- which was cleared by EU regulators on Tuesday -- Cable said he wanted to halt it.

Cablegate: MPAA, RIAA, BSA weighed in on France’s Internet disconnection law
The "Creation and Internet law," which became law in Sept. 2009, was initially set-back for months by the theatrics of 15 French socialist lawmakers, an April, 2009 US State Department communique details.
Noting the vote was not very well attended as most members assumed it would pass, the socialists hid in a broom closet near the entrance of parliament. Since there were no members near the chamber entrance, that meant the vote was to proceed with them in absentia, but at the last moment they emerged from the closet and charged into parliament to cast a bloc of 'no' votes, effectively killing the bill by a ballot of 21-15.
That lawmakers hid in a closet to stifle the French Internet law went unreported at the time.
After reintroduction, the bill passed in September.

Germany: Bild commentary by Wilfried Pastor on NRW's budget and ensuing legal battle
wdr
ccoaler.blogspot.co,:Smooth success for Kraft
What startles me most from a left perspective is why the Social Dems did not killthe 1.3bio for WestLB. I mean they were originally introduced by the conservatives and now the conservatives doesnt want them anymore. So, skip it. 6.6 bio and 7 bio is much closer than 6.6 bio and 8.4bio
The date for the big staging is underlined for long: the conservatives described their judicial objection towards NRW's budget. Judiciary hitman Scholz is presenting an analysis why NRW's govt should be hindered from making any new debts by an immediate ordinance. It is a novum in Germany's judicial history.
Whether the file will at least be accepted by the court? Totally open. The judges could ask why the conservatives did not do a thing a parliament. There was not filed one single change to the budget. Though all opposition parties oppose 1.3bio euros in provisions for NRW's nearly bankrupt WestLB.
Finally, the conservatives did not bring in even all of their representatives for the vote. Three representatives were missing among them ex-prime Ruettgers. Some party colleagues of Ruettgers are now scandalizing Ruettger's trip. They are complaining about missing solidarity, "self-castration" is even more precise.
(A defeat -in a whole despite certain changes- couldn't have been stopped anyhow with Ruettgers also - due to the principal neutrality of leftparty.)
On the other hand it is the third vote where some representatives of the conservatives are missing. What is faction head Laumann doing as a first job anyhow? Or his vice Laschet? They are responsible for complete appearance. Where is the impact of NRW's party head and German minister of environment Roettgen and his executor Wittke? It serves the confusing picture that the conservatives killed the media-state-contract this week which was developed by the own people for 1 1/2 years, Ruettgers then filed a corresponding application. Now they teached themselves a lesson with some "think what." Instead of fighting left cable winches, the conservatives are paying off internal bills.
The filing in front of court puts new pressure on the party, which is already deeply divided. If it is successful, social dems and ecos will file for new elections due to the great polls. The conservatives will have to affirm this - whether they like it or not.

WikiLeaks cables: Mervyn King plotted banks bailout by four cash-rich nations
The Bank of England governor, Mervyn King, was so concerned about the health of the world's banks in March 2008 that he plotted a secret bailout of the system using funds from cash-rich nations, according to a US embassy cable released by WikiLeaks.
Six months before the world financial crisis reached its peak, forcing taxpayers to rescue collapsing financial institutions, King told US officials in London that the UK, US, Switzerland and Japan could jointly enable a multibillion-pound cash injection into global banks, overriding the "dysfunctional" G7 nations.
The leak may allow King to claim that he – rather than Gordon Brown – was one of the brains behind the bailout of the banks, which took place in October 2008.
According to the cable, King told Robert Tuttle, the US ambassador to Britain, and the treasury deputy secretary Robert Kimitt, who was visiting London, that there needed to be a "coordinated effort to possibly recapitalise the global banking system" as well as a way to rid the banks of the toxic loans on their balance sheets.
The ambassador said in the cable, dated March 2008, that King's proposals "were not casual ideas developed in the course of a luncheon conversation. It was clear that his principal objective in the meeting was to outline his outside-the-box thinking for Kimmitt. King suggested that the US, UK, Switzerland and perhaps Japan might form a temporary new group to jointly develop an effort to bring together sources of capital to recapitalise all major banks."

Eklat in parliament - CDU and Lib dems file suit against record debt!
If the judges stick to the conservative opinion, there may be new elections. Social Dems and Greens voted a budget through that was developed a bit too late, for the election date in may 10 and the change in govt. The budget contains a revised increase of new debt from 6.6 to 8.4 bio euros - a new record for NRW.
Conservatives and lib dems dems announced they will sue against the budget in front of the constitutional court - immediately after the vote.
A so called immediate ordinance should furthermore stop the new budget from being listed in NRW's law list -also a job of the court. Object shot out of sky above Israeli nuclear plant, military says
Jerusalem (CNN) -- The Israeli Air Force shot down an unidentified flying object over the Dimona nuclear plant in the Negev Desert Thursday, the Israel Defense Forces said.
The object appeared in a designated no-fly zone, the air force was scrambled and the object was shot down, the IDF said.
The object could have been a party balloon, the IDF said, but forces have not yet found the debris to determine what it was.
There have been unconfirmed media reports that it was a motor-driven object. The air force reacted according to procedure when the object was spotted, the IDF said.
The Israeli daily newspaper Haaretz reported that last October "IDF warplanes intercepted an Israeli ultralight aircraft that accidentally flew into the area and forced it to land at an airstrip in southern Israel."
It also reported that "an Israeli surface-to-air missile downed a crippled Israeli fighter-bomber that strayed into the restricted zone" during the Six Day War in 1967. The craft's pilot was killed.
Germany: Afghan pullout to start 2011
German foreign minister: expectations for Afghanistan lower, troop pullout to start next year
Germany's foreign minister played down the country's expectations for Afghanistan's future Thursday while reiterating that German troops will start their withdrawal by the end of next year as planned.
After nearly a decade in Afghanistan, Guido Westerwelle told parliament, Germany now has "more realistic expectations" for the country.
"Good governance remains an important benchmark, but if we are more realistic then good-enough governance — which we can reach in the foreseeable future in Afghanistan — is satisfactorily good," Westerwelle said.
Germany currently has some 4,600 troops in Afghanistan, responsible for a large swath of the country's north including the cities of Mazar-e-Sharif and Kunduz, and helped command the International Security Assistance Force in 2003.

Mexico drone crashes in TX back yard
An unmanned drone belonging to the Mexican government crash landed Tuesday in El Paso's Lower Valley, officials confirmed today.
"I was told that it crashed in somebody's back yard, and that no one was injured. I was paged at 6:28 p.m. on Tuesday, so it happened shortly before that. We were told it was not a police matter," said Detective Mike Baranyay, a spokesman for the El Paso Police Department.
The crash occurred at Yarbrough and Loop 375.
Police said the U.S. Border Patrol seized the aircraft, which was to be transported back to one of the international bridges so that Mexican officials could recover the drone.

South Korean army chief resigns
The South Korean presidential office accepted the resignation of the chief of the Army Tuesday, the Yonhap news agency reported.
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Hwang Eui-don had received criticism about a property investment before submitting his letter of resignation, Yonhap reported.
Hwang was named to the position in June and was quickly accused of using insider information to make money off of a property investment, Yonhap reported.
This resignation comes weeks after the country's defense minister resigned.

The criticism towards party head Westerwelle out of the own ranks is becoming louder: in an open letter he is demanded to resign. The letter was signed by prominent member of the lib dems from Baden Wuerttemberg.
The lib dems in Rhinania Palatinate (Rheinland Pfalz) have also no interest to get into an election campaign with Westerwellle. "Him showing up is no help."

Well, my impression is bullshit. The Chinese just lifted from 3 to 4 to fight inflation. Next thing is: Im quite happy with the Euro at current. If this was 1929 - id est there were several European currencies at large - this policy would be disastrous. So this policy - only thrashes the dollar
Germany to compensate generation of abused foster children
German victims of abuse in foster homes have said the 120 million euros (£100m) proposed as compensation is "humiliatingly" small compared with damages awarded in other countries, and vowed to fight for more.
independent
Germany has owned up to one of the most disturbing examples of mass child and youth abuse in its post-war history, some 60 years after the first teenagers started being locked away and mistreated by supposedly "caring" foster homes.
The country agreed yesterday to provide a €120m (£101m) compensation fund for the estimated 30,000 victims who were among the 800,000 children in German foster homes in the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies.
Institutions that for decades meted out inhuman treatment – including ritual beatings, periods of solitary confinement, forced labour and sexual assaults – were not youth remand centres or borstals as might be expected, but homes run by nuns and priests in former West Germany's Catholic and Protestant churches, as well as state-run homes.
(Dec. 14) -- After Italian lawmakers narrowly avoided handing down a vote of no confidence for Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, mayhem ensued in the streets of Rome.
Berlusconi came under fire earlier this year for a series of sex scandals and for cutting ties with close ally Gianfranco Fini, compelling lawmakers to question whether the 74-year-old media tycoon could still round up a parliamentary majority.
In addition to allegations that he recruited dozens of prostitutes for private parties, Berlusconi was criticized for using his majority to pass laws that would help his legal problems, and a U.S. Embassy cable released by WikiLeaks described him as a "feckless leader."
Needless to say, this isn't sitting well with a number of lawmakers. "Yeah, it's like this, Mr. Prime Minister," Antonio Di Pietro, leader of the Italy Principles party, told reporters. "Because whichever way the vote goes, whatever it is, the vote that you have brought, one thing is for sure: You no longer have the majority that allows you to govern. You just don't have it anymore."
