In a total disaster for the initiators, only 14.2% of all voters in Berlin supported the measure that woudda made Religion a duty lesson on Berlin's schools. The measure was heavily favoured by German chancellor Angela Merkel. The current rule is that ethics is the duty lesson and that Religion is taught after the normal education. A clear majority opposed the measure even of the voters taking part in the vote (what were barely 30 %). The number opposing was at 51%. The governing red red coalition that governs in Berlin (social dems/ leftparty) opposed the measure. The result can be seen as a clear victory for governing mayor Wowereit.
