Attorney General Menachem Mazuz said he was considering charging Olmert with fraud and breach of confidence, accusing him of receiving illicit funds from American businessman Morris Talansky and using his official position to help Talansky’s business ventures. The allegations stem when Olmert was mayor of Jerusalem, before he became prime minister in 2006.
Olmert says the money was legal campaign funding.
Mazuz will make the final decision on whether to indict Olmert after the prime minister has had a chance to refute the charges in a hearing before the attorney general. No date has been set for that meeting.
