Colognes city archive collapsed today at 14 h CET. Police sirens roared and Helicopters flew above the scene. Eyewitnesses described a noise as loud as such of an earthquake. The area was blocked by a huge radius, bordering houses were evacuated. Neighbors reported though that some citizens didn't want to leave their houses. The adjacent former police site is also endangered. many cars in front were covered with rubble.
There are no reports about deaths yet. 2 people r reported to be missing.
Meanwhile a dog squad arrived to search for the missing. At 16:14h the first dog started its search. Excavators and other heavy equipment are supposed to reach the scene soon. 180 men of the fire brigade are on the scene.
The new subway is under construction in the area of the Waidmarkt. Its a below-the-surface drilling. The density of the earth next to the drilling is increased thru the pressure of the drilling. drilling is always risky next to rivers. In effect, water broke into the subway tunnel after the collapse.
