Peoples referendum on Germanys oldest airport

http://news.de.msn.com/politik/Article.aspx?cp-documentid=8183700

Leftparty's (ex communists) Gysi supported the continuation of Tempelhof. Mayor Wowereit (Social Dems) wanted it closed.

Berlins mayor Wowereit got thru with what he wanted: The peoples referendum on the airport Tempelhof has the following result: no continuation of service. THOUGH: Wowereit underestimated this form of direct democracy. Colleagues in his party will remember this failure.

No continuation of Tempelhof. Only half a million and with this too less voters - hardly a quarter of the total number of voters - voted for the 'application' to keep operations up at Germany's oldest airport. Tempelhof shall be closed in october according to the senate. Even a support of continued operation wouldn't have been binding for Berlins senate.

60,2 % of all participants of the peoples referendum voted for continued operation. A total of 530.231 votes FOR the operation. But they represented just 21,7% of all voters eligible to vote (of a total of 2,4mio eligible voters). For a success, the airport needed 25% of all eligible voters.

Against a continued operation 39,6 % of the voters in the referendum voted.

Participation was at 35%.
