NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) -- Incumbent president Mwai Kibaki has been re-elected as leader of Kenya, the country's electoral commission announced Sunday.

Kibaki defeated his rival, Raila Odinga, of the opposition Orange Democratic Movement, with a margin of 231,000 votes out of the more than 8.8 million votes cast, the chairman of the electoral commission, Samuel Kivuitu, said in an address broadcast by the Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation.
The closest election in the country's history threatened to descend into chaos after supporters of Odinga earlier disrupted a press conference where the electoral commission was expected to announce the results.
Kivuitu was escorted out of the room after shouts broke out from supporters of Odinga as the chairman began reading results of the fiercely disputed election.
The chairman then recorded the television message in his private offices.
